Recap: Spreading Joy at Our Christmas in July DiscoParty!

If you walked past the Lyrebird Community Centre in Carrum Downs on the evening of July 10th, you wouldn’t just have heard music—you would have felt the energy before you even opened the doors.

There is something truly magic about a room full of people who are simply there to celebrate each other.

On July 10th, our team at Empowering All Abilities joined hands with the wonderful folks with Together in Motion to throw our Christmas in July Disco Party.

From 6:00 to 9:00 PM, the hall was filled with Christmas tunes, sparkling lights, festive costumes, warm cups of tea, and above all, pure, unfiltered joy.

If you were there with us, you know exactly what we mean. If you missed it, grab a warm drink and let us walk you through a night we won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

When the Disco Ball Started Spinning

From the minute the clock struck six, the room burst into life.

There was no awkward waiting around or waiting for someone else to break the ice—the moment the music started, the dance floor belonged to everyone.

Participants, families, and support workers jumped right into the middle of it.

We saw dance moves that put professionals to shame, spontaneous sing-alongs to classic hits, and endless high-fives across the floor.

What made the evening so incredible wasn’t just the music; it was the atmosphere.

It was a space where everyone felt completely safe to be themselves, express their personality, and dance like nobody was watching.

Whether someone wanted to break out their best move in the center of the ring or spin around with a friend near the edges, every single person found their rhythm.

Tinsel, Santa Hats, and Unforgettable Costumes

We asked everyone to dress up in their favorite Christmas attire, but our community blew all expectations out of the water!

The creativity on display was incredible. We saw everything from full Santa suits paired with summer shades to glowing fairy lights, cozy holiday sweaters, and festive headbands.

Choosing winners for the Best Dressed Contest was almost impossible because of how much heart everyone put into their outfits.

When it came time to hand out the prizes, the cheer in the room was deafening.

Every person who stepped up to show off their outfit was met with applause, big smiles, and genuine support from every corner of the venue.

Conversations, Hot Tea, and Shared Table Moments

While the dance floor was buzzing, the rest of the hall offered its own special moments.

Events like this are as much about quiet connection as they are about loud music. Over warm cups of coffee, hot tea, and plates of delicious snacks, parents and carers had a chance to sit back, relax, and chat.

Participants took breaks from dancing to sit together, share laughs, and catch up with old friends while making new ones.

Seeing someone walk in feeling a little shy and leave three hours later laughing side-by-side with a new friend is the real heart of what we do.

Those unscripted, genuine human connections are what turn an ordinary event into a cherished memory.

At Empowering All Abilities, our mission is built on supporting independence, confidence, and true social inclusion.

But those words shouldn’t just live on a website—they need to be lived out in real life.

Living with a disability or navigating support services can sometimes feel clinical or routine. Nights like the Christmas in July Disco remind us why community exists in the first place.

Seeing support workers dancing right alongside participants, celebrating their wins, and sharing genuine laughs shows the heart of our community.

It isn’t just about providing support; it is about standing side-by-side and building a life filled with connection and happiness.
